Battle of Gallipoli

When? April 25, 1915 - January 9, 1916

Who? The Allied Forces (including British, Russian and French troops, as well as the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps or ANZAC) against the Turks

Where? The Gallipoli Peninsula (see map below)

What? The battle of Gallipoli was a failed attempt from the Allied Forces to control a sea route from Russia to Europe through the Dardanelles and in doing so, take the Turkish out of the war. This campaign failed because of lack of knowledge on the terrain.
